How to Choose an Electric Vehicle Charger? 2026 Guide

Elektrikli Araç Şarj Cihazı Nasıl Seçilir? 2026 Türkiye Rehberi

In Turkey in 2024, 1 in every 10 new cars sold was electric. According to the Automotive Distributors Association (ODD), more than 47,000 fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in Turkey between January and December 2024. In this rapidly growing market, choosing the right charger is becoming the most critical decision of EV ownership.

In this guide we cover charger types, power options, installation requirements and the points to watch out for, comprehensively.

What Are the Types of EV Chargers?

Chargers fall into three basic categories: Mode 1/2 portable chargers, Mode 3 AC wall-mounted (wallbox) devices, and DC fast-charging stations. For home and workplace use, Mode 3 AC wallbox devices are the optimal solution — both safe and cost-effective.

Type Power Time (60 kWh) Use Cost
Portable (Mode 2) 2.3 – 7.4 kW 8–26 hours Emergency/travel Low
AC Wallbox (Mode 3) 7.4 – 22 kW 3–8 hours Home/office/car park Medium
DC Fast Charging (Mode 4) 50 – 350 kW 15–45 minutes Public station High

Recommendation: For the average driver who charges at home overnight, a 7.4–11 kW AC wallbox is more than enough. 22 kW is ideal for users whose battery supports three-phase charging and who need to charge more than once a day.

Which Charging Power Is Right for Me?

The right power choice depends on three factors: the maximum OBC (On-Board Charger) power your vehicle supports, the number of phases in your home's electrical installation, and your daily charging needs.

Vehicle OBC Powers (2024 Examples)

Vehicle Model Max. AC Charging Power Recommended WiseCar Model
Tesla Model 3 (Europe) 11 kW WTP 22kW / WTA 22 kW
Togg T10X 22 kW WTP 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
Volkswagen ID.4 11 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
Hyundai IONIQ 6 11 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
BMW i4 11 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
Renault Zoe 22 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
Fiat 500e 11 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW
Kia EV6 11 kW WTP3 22 kW / WTA 22 kW

Note: There is no practical benefit in buying a charger with a higher capacity than your vehicle's OBC power; the car charges at the limit of its own OBC. However, if you plan to change vehicles in the future, buying 22 kW can be a sensible investment.

Single-Phase or Three-Phase?

Older buildings in Turkey mostly have single-phase (230V, 50 Hz) electrical installations. These allow a maximum of 7.4 kW charging. In buildings constructed after 2010, three-phase installations (400V) have become common; these allow 11 kW or 22 kW charging.

For a single-phase installation, the WiseCar WTP2 - 7.4kW or WTP1 - 3.5kW is recommended; for a three-phase installation, the WiseCar WTP3 22 or WTA 22.

How Long Does Home Charger Installation Take and What Does It Cost?

A standard home installation is completed by a licensed electrician in an average of 2–4 hours. The installation cost varies according to cable distance, the current state of the installation, and the quality of materials used. Across Turkey, standard home installation costs range between 7,000–20,000 TRY.

Factors Affecting Installation Cost

  • Cable distance: As the distance from the electrical panel to the charging point increases, cable cost rises
  • Cable cross-section: 22 kW three-phase connections require 5x6 mm² cable or larger
  • Existing installation: Lack of grounding or an old panel can add cost
  • RCD (residual current device): Mandatory under IEC 61851; extra cost if the panel doesn't have one

EV Charging Statistics in Turkey (2024–2025)

EV and charging infrastructure data in Turkey is growing rapidly:

  • Total number of electric vehicles in Turkey: approximately 120,000 at the end of 2024 (ODD and SHGM data)
  • EV sales in 2024: 9.7% of total vehicle sales (ODD)
  • Turkey's 2030 EV target: 30% of the total fleet (Ministry of Energy projection)
  • EV penetration rate in Europe (2024): 18.5% (ACEA)
  • Where the average EV driver charges: 80% home, 15% workplace, 5% public (EV Study, EPDK)
  • Cost advantage of home charging vs. public charging: 40–60% cheaper with a night tariff

What to Watch Out for When Buying a Charger

Use this checklist to make the right choice:

  1. Check your vehicle's OBC power — it's written in the car's manual
  2. Find out the number of phases in your installation — single or three-phase?
  3. Grounding check — if there's no grounding, it must be installed before setup
  4. Choose a device with a CE certificate — uncertified products carry safety risks
  5. Measure the cable distance — for selecting the correct cable cross-section
  6. IP rating — minimum IP54 for outdoor areas
  7. Ask about the local service network — fast support in case of a fault is critical
  8. Smart features — night-tariff tracking, remote control

Conclusion

EV charging infrastructure in Turkey is maturing rapidly. Choosing the right charger both increases daily comfort and protects battery health. As WiseCar, we're with you on your electric mobility journey with our CE-certified chargers manufactured in Turkey and backed by a 2-year warranty.
